Styling 101: Designer vs Non-Designer!

Even though designers dominate the fashion industry, people should never forget that fashion is not all about designers. It is basically clothing, trends and how you style it! Ralph Lauren said it best "Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you."
You can wear designer from head to toe and still look hideous, whereas someone wearing non designer clothes can look like a million bucks!

And please don't get me wrong, I have nothing against designers. Actually I have a couple of designer goods on my wish list myself but I mean there is nothing wrong with mixing things up.

If you are on a budget, but still wish to invest in some designer goods, to me the designer goods that are totally worth the investment are mainly accessories, like sunglasses, shoes, handbags and watches (jewelry). Since handbags tend to be more expensive my advice will be to find classic or limited edition pieces of that particular designer. In this case your bag will be "classic" & not "last season" as time passes.

Next I put a top 3 together (from my not so long wish list) of the designer goods that to me are totally worth the investment and they could probably last you a life time if you take good care of them.

  • Speedy 25, 30 or 35 from the Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene Canvas line
Speedy 30
This bag is versatility at its best! Try to think of a color that this bag can not be worn with..... You're still thinking right? That's probably because there are none! Besides matching with every color, it can also be used day and night. Which of course makes it a pretty wise investment.

  • Chanel Classic Flap Bag

Besides being part of the Classic Collection of Chanel, this bag screams style & classiness. Believe it or not this bag can be worn with simple casual outfits and also less  casual outfits. This bag will definitely make a good accessory during night time.

  • Christian Louboutin Rolando pumps (black or nude)

No closet is complete without one of the oh so famous red soles.

Remember that when investing in designer goods, you should make sure that everything you buy is combinable (yes it is a word) with the majority of your closet.

Labels are not everything, but they can surely give your outfit that extra little bit of "oomph" when needed, if needed. At the end of the story the only thing that matters is how confident & glamorous you look wearing the clothes and not the labels no one can actually see!

What are your designer must haves??

  2. Love your post! The Chanel classic flip is indeed a must and the nude Louboutins should be high on the list too!
I do think apparel can be timeless too. For me a good custom-made/fitted suit is also a must. I'm not old I promise! *hihihii* (but for those who already work it would be a good addition). I personally love Stella McCartney.
